Yogurts are one of the popular foods in children's meals in the UK, but a new study may prompt parents to reconsider their choices in this regard.

Nestlé Smarties Yogurt Tops the List

Research conducted by a group of experts shows that out of 104 types of yogurt examined, only two had low amounts of sugar. The Nestlé Smarties Vanilla Split Pot, with 14.1 grams of sugar per 100 grams, is identified as the worst option.

Healthier Options in Comparison

In contrast, The Collective Great Dairy Natural + Vitamin D and Yoplait Petits Filous No Added Sugar Strawberry & Banana, with 4.7 grams of sugar per 100 grams, are introduced as healthier options. Meanwhile, other harmful yogurts like Milbona Fruit Duo Fromage Frais Strawberry & Vanilla from Lidl, with 11.3 grams, and Munch Bunch Double Up Strawberry & Vanilla from Nestlé, with 10.7 grams of sugar per 100 grams, rank higher.

According to Dr. Kautar Hashem, Head of Research and Impact at Action on Salt & Sugar, parents logically expect products with cartoon packaging and a target market of children to be healthier options, but findings show this is not the case.

Risks of Excess Sugar Consumption

Yogurts are recognized as sources of protein and calcium, and NHS advice recommends that parents give their children at least 350 milliliters of milk or two servings of dairy products. However, many of these yogurts contain dangerous amounts of sugar that can lead to tooth decay.

Based on these findings, Action on Salt & Sugar calls for products with attractive packaging for children to only include healthy options. Dr. Hashem added, "The government must take strong actions to reduce sugar levels in food products from companies and reserve attractive packaging for the best products."

These results coincide with the Recipe for Change citizens' charter, which calls on officials to stand up against large food companies and make healthier foods more accessible and affordable.
