Lucy Wyndham-Read, a personal trainer and online fitness star, recently warned about the negative effects of sitting and abdominal exercises on health and belly fat reduction. She believes that these types of exercises are not only ineffective but may also cause serious injuries to the back and neck area.
Risks of Abdominal Exercises
Research conducted in 2011 by a group of American universities showed that sitting and similar exercises have little impact on reducing belly fat. In this study, 24 adults underwent intense abdominal training, and at the end of six weeks, no significant reduction in belly fat was observed. Recently, researchers at the University of Aberdeen concluded that resistance exercises like planks and crunches are less effective than running and cycling.

Lucy Wyndham-Read stated: "Targeted exercises only engage small groups of muscles, and this is not only ineffective for fat reduction but will have very little impact on muscle tone and strength. Additionally, sitting can put pressure on the spinal discs and lead to severe pain. This is especially dangerous for women who have recently given birth."
Effective Methods for Reducing Belly Fat
This famous trainer suggests focusing on standing movements and cardio activities instead of abdominal exercises. She emphasizes that "jumping off the ground and forgetting about sit-ups and planks yields the best results. I have been teaching for 30 years, and exercises performed while standing are far more effective than lying down exercises."
Therefore, she recommends that individuals choose five standing cardio moves and repeat them daily for five minutes. She says, "As long as you are consistent, you will notice significant changes after a few weeks."
Wyndham-Read also points to walking as an effective method for strengthening abdominal muscles. She recommends a ten-minute morning walk, a five-minute standing exercise during lunch, and another ten-minute walk in the evening. These methods are far more effective than intense abdominal workouts.
Finally, Lucy Wyndham-Read emphasizes the importance of balance in the diet. She says, "The best way to achieve a toned belly is to choose appropriate meals and strive to prepare homemade foods. You should make healthy choices 80 percent of the time and allow yourself to enjoy your favorite foods for the remaining 20 percent."
