The Polish government, led by Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister of the country, has warned that Russia may carry out missile attacks on Ukraine-supporting countries, including Britain. This warning was issued after Poland was forced to close its airspace and prepare its fighter jets due to recent Kremlin attacks.
New Russian Threats
In a meeting with representatives of the Polish parliament, the Polish government announced that information from Western intelligence agencies indicates that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, is preparing to escalate the conflict. Tusk emphasized in this meeting that these threats should not be ignored in any way and that Poland must be ready to face any scenario.
Tusk further stated, "We clearly know that he (Putin) is designing something bad. But our most important duty is to prepare for various scenarios. We will not simply trust these messages that Russia has good intentions and is going to behave correctly. There is no evidence of this."
Escalating Tensions in Ukraine
This warning comes in the wake of ruthless Russian attacks in western Ukraine, near the Polish border. Recently, a Russian jet-powered drone attacked a residential area in Odessa, which was close to the presence of Western diplomats. These actions seem aimed not only at intimidating Ukraine but also at pressuring its supporting countries, including Britain.
Tusk also pointed out that Russia may in the future portray its attacks in a way that they appear accidental, aiming to undermine NATO's will to respond. The coming months, especially in autumn and winter, seem to be a critical period in this four-year war.
Meanwhile, the increasing use of Russian jet-powered drones in western Ukraine has led to more calls for preemptive action from Britain and other allies. Ben Wallace, the former British Defense Minister, described this action as the next natural step, as the high speed of these drones shortens the response time of Western air defense.
Tusk also highlighted the real danger of drones or other types of missiles crossing into the territory of Eastern NATO countries, noting that damage could occur while the official justification for these attacks is declared as an accidental incident.
Poland, which is currently investing more in strengthening its defense than Britain, is confident that it can defeat Russia in any conventional war with the support of its European allies. Radosław Sikorski, the Polish Foreign Minister, previously stated that Kremlin forces would quickly be defeated against the air power of Poland and NATO.
