The ozone hole in Antarctica has recently opened significantly, and it is predicted that this trend will continue. Scientists from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) have reported a sharp increase in this hole in early September based on their recent studies.

Sudden Growth of the Ozone Hole

In August, this hole was typically expanding, covering an area of about 15 million square kilometers. However, on September 12, the area of the hole reached 25 million square kilometers, which is nearly 5 million square kilometers more than the average for this period. This rapid increase indicates the complex impacts of weather conditions and human activities on the ozone layer.

Impact of Weather Changes on the Ozone Hole

Lawrence Rojel, the director of CAMS, emphasized that these findings highlight the importance of monitoring the complex interactions between human disturbances and natural factors. The ozone layer protects life on Earth by absorbing a large portion of the sun's ultraviolet radiation. In recent years, the emission of greenhouse gases and chemicals such as CFCs has weakened this layer, with its effects being most pronounced in Antarctica.

In the 1970s, the ozone hole reached a record of 29.6 million square kilometers, and since then, smaller and shorter-lived holes have been reported, indicating an improvement in the state of the ozone layer. However, recent analyses show that this hole was typically expanding in August, but with a sudden drop in temperature in early September, its opening has intensified.

Low temperatures allow for the formation of polar stratospheric clouds, which play a role in activating chemical processes that destroy ozone. Rojel added, "The development of the ozone hole in Antarctica can vary from year to year, depending on various weather and chemical factors."

Recent news from CAMS also indicates that August 2023 was the hottest month recorded in history. With an average temperature of 16.96 degrees Celsius, August 2023 broke the previous record set in July 2023. These changes reflect the profound impacts of climate change on the atmosphere and oceans.

The ozone layer, composed of three oxygen atoms, is located at altitudes between 7 to 25 miles above the Earth's surface and acts as a natural shield against harmful ultraviolet radiation. At ground level, ozone can be formed due to photochemical reactions with pollutants from vehicles and other sources, leading to the formation of harmful smog.

Although weather conditions in the past two years have helped reduce ozone depletion, the current area of the ozone hole is still much larger than in the 1980s. This indicates that levels of ozone-depleting chemicals remain high.
