An armed hunter in Kruger National Park, South Africa, lost his life due to a sudden attack by a group of elephants. The incident occurred while he was aiming to shoot a white rhino, which is valued in the black market as much as gold and cocaine.
Details of the Incident
This hunter, along with another accomplice, was seeking to hunt a white rhino with a powerful rifle and an axe. They hoped to earn £10,000 with a single shot. However, as they approached the rhinos, the elephants, which had taken shelter in the shade of trees, suddenly charged at them.
According to local sources, both hunters quickly fled in different directions, but one of them, who was aiming, was slower than the others and consequently, the elephants attacked him. He was quickly trampled, and the only sign left of him was a large bloodstain and his clothes.
Elephants' Support for Wildlife
The other hunter managed to escape but was later arrested. Officials from Kruger National Park responded to the incident, stating that the elephants acted as natural guardians of the rhinos and actually helped them defend themselves.
Additionally, there are about 1,850 white rhinos in this park, recognized as one of the Big Five. Last year, 175 rhinos lost their lives due to illegal poaching, and this trend continues. Rhino horns, made solely of keratin, are used in traditional Asian medicine as magical remedies, and their value is so high that they are sold at exorbitant prices in black markets.
A spokesperson for South African National Park, GP Love, said, "We received information that two hunters illegally entered the park. It appears they encountered a group of elephants, resulting in one of them losing his life."
This incident, alongside several other cases of wildlife attacks on hunters, once again highlights the dangers of living in the wild and the consequences of illegal hunting. In recent years, several such attacks have been reported, particularly in South Africa.
