York City manager, Scott Lindsey, called his controversial decision to substitute Eli Pearce, the team star, just 44 seconds after the start of the game 'ridiculously absurd.' This substitution occurred during York City's 3-1 defeat against Newcastle U21 in the EFL Cup.
Strange EFL rules and their consequences
Lindsey said about this: 'This is a ridiculous situation. Eli had trained today; the players who were in the first team played with the youth team. But he had to do this tonight; it's really absurd. But we had to do it because we have to comply with all the conditions of the rules.'
The EFL Cup rules state that all EFL clubs must include at least four senior players in their starting lineup, referred to as 'eligible players.' These rules have forced Lindsey to field four senior players, including Pearce, who has scored 67 goals in 102 appearances for York City.
Concerns of the York City manager
Lindsey continued: 'This is madness, it really is, and these rules somehow prevent younger players from playing in clubs like ours. Ben Farar, who should have started in that game, is now sitting on the bench.'
Pearce had scored two goals and provided an assist in York City's recent game against Swindon Town and was likely hoping to rest in the match against Newcastle U21. But the only factor that prevented this was his home location.
Lindsey explained: 'The reason I chose Eli Pearce is that he lives in York. I'm not even joking. I didn't want anyone to travel from Sheffield or anywhere else just to play for 30 seconds. That would be a waste of time.'
He concluded: 'After the game, I told him he had played his best game, and we joked a bit. He asked me, 'If I score a penalty in the first 30 seconds, can I take it?' and I said no, the substitution board would go up.'
