Jade Thirlwall, the beloved singer of the music group 'Little Mix', candidly revealed her experience with a rare health issue known as 'Syndrome of Inability to Burp' (R-CPD). She stated that after learning about this condition, she feels 'finally seen and understood'.
Syndrome of Inability to Burp and Its Effects
'Syndrome of Inability to Burp', scientifically known as Retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction, is a rare condition where the cricopharyngeus muscle in the throat cannot relax, preventing the individual from burping normally. The effects of this condition include severe bloating, pain from air in the stomach, pressure in the chest, and abnormal sounds from the abdomen.
Thirlwall noted about this issue: 'It has always been presented as an interesting fact that I cannot burp, but this has caused me problems throughout my life, and I am tired of people commenting on my weight and body on stage.'
Raising Awareness and Seeking Help
After watching one of Gemma Renwick's TikTok videos that addressed the identification and awareness of R-CPD, Jade commented: 'I really feel seen and understood.' Jade also expressed concern that a treatment called 'throtox', which involves injecting Botox into the cricopharyngeus muscle, might affect her voice.
Gemma responded to Jade's comment by asking her to collaborate on the awareness campaign, saying: 'If someone as big as Jade can help this campaign and share it on her platform, it would be incredibly valuable.'
Thirlwall has also previously mentioned issues related to her eating disorders and stated that although she is now in the best health of her life, she still faces negative comments about her weight. In an interview, she said: 'I fight with myself every day not to resort to Ozempic. I have no judgment about those who use it, but due to my history with eating disorders, I don’t know where this will lead.'
This singer expressed regret that most negative comments come from women, adding: 'It’s painful for people to tell me 'Maybe you’re pregnant', but this is somehow a result of being in the spotlight as an independent star.'
Jade Thirlwall has spoken honestly and courageously about her challenges and hopes that by raising awareness of rare health issues, she can help others feel less alone and misunderstood.
