Philippe Coutinho, the 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder, has joined Santos to once again play alongside his former national team teammate Neymar Junior. This transfer comes after months of Coutinho being away from football due to mental health issues.
Return to Roots
Coutinho shared a photo of himself with Neymar, reviving sweet memories from their youth. The two players took a similar photo with a digital camera as an old picture from their days in the Brazilian football academy. In his first interview as a Santos player, Coutinho stated that Neymar played a key role in his decision to join the club.
He said: "Neymar definitely had a very important role in my coming here. He is a player who needs no introduction, a friend I have known since childhood. I think he was the first person to message me after I left Vasco. At that time, I told him: 'Look, Ney, I would be very happy to play with you, but right now I don't feel good and it's not possible.'"
Recent Challenges and Decision to Return
Coutinho had previously stepped back from playing at Vasco due to mental fatigue and disappointment from his fans. In an emotional statement, he said, "I am really very tired" and added: "My relationship with Vasco has always been and will always be one of love. With a heavy heart, I understand that now is the right time to step away from the game and end this chapter."
Now, after some time away, Coutinho feels ready to return to the field. Expressing his happiness about joining Santos, he said: "I am going to a great club, in a new city. It is unfair that I cannot continue my work and play football. I thank the club president, Matos, and Ney. I am happy to take on this challenge."
Coutinho has played for major clubs in Europe such as Liverpool and Barcelona and is recognized as one of the talented players of his generation. Now, with hopes of returning to his brilliant football days, he has joined Santos to once again enjoy his love for the game.
