Hailey Min, a young woman who underwent a double mastectomy at the age of 27, made this important decision because she inherited the faulty BRCA1 gene, which increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. At a friendly gathering, after her surgery, she joyfully spoke about the results of her surgery and was able to impress her friends. Their reactions reflected her satisfaction with the results, to the extent that some of her friends wished they had a similar appearance.
A decision against risk
Hailey began the process of testing and medical consultations in 2015 when she learned that she had inherited the faulty gene from her father. After receiving positive test results, she discussed the genetic risks with her father, who was deeply affected. Her father, Elliot, felt a strong sense of guilt remembering her mother, Hannah, who had suffered from breast cancer at a young age. This situation led Hailey to decide to undergo the mastectomy as soon as possible.

The surgery and reconstruction process
Hailey ultimately underwent a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction at the age of 27. With the guidance of Dr. Fozia Imtiaz Krosby and Dr. Dan Marsh, a plastic surgeon, she was able to choose the best option for her breast reconstruction. Hailey decided to have the breast reconstruction done during the mastectomy, known as immediate reconstruction. This decision helped her reduce the psychological effects of the surgery.
Hailey Min is now volunteering for the breast cancer charity CoppaFeel! and is trying to raise awareness among others about the importance of genetic testing and cancer prevention. She believes that with the right choices, major risks can be avoided and a healthier life can be achieved.
