Dalia Kings, a cleaning expert from the British Cleaning Council, has discussed the proper way to clean toilets and concluded that doing this once a week is sufficient. Despite various opinions on the right time to clean the toilet, she stresses the importance of performing a deeper clean periodically as well.
Different Methods of Cleaning the Toilet
Online, users provide varying opinions; from daily cleaning to doing it only when the toilet is clearly dirty. In this context, Kings emphasizes that in a family of five, it is enough to check the toilet regularly and clean it once a week.
She explains: "If done properly, it will only take ten minutes." Additionally, she suggests that every so often, a deeper cleaning should be done, which includes removing the toilet seat and cleaning areas that are harder to reach.
The Importance of Cleaning During Illness
Primrose Freestone, a microbiologist from the University of Leicester, points out that if there is a sick person in the house, more attention should be paid to cleaning the toilet and bathroom. She says: "For normal use, a deep clean once a week is sufficient, but if someone in the house is sick and infectious, it should be cleaned after each use of the toilet. Because the spray area from flushing the toilet can contaminate other surfaces in the bathroom."
For effective toilet cleaning, Kings recommends having six essential products on hand: a toilet brush, a toilet-specific cleaner, rubber gloves, several cloths, an old toothbrush, and a bucket. She also mentions creating a color-coded system for the toilet cleaning kit to prevent the transfer of bacteria to other areas of the home.
Kings suggests a three-step method for cleaning the toilet: first, flush the toilet to remove any waste from the bowl, then use the toilet brush to direct water to the bottom of the bowl and apply the cleaner in this area. After a few minutes, clean the inside with the toilet brush and flush again.
By following these simple tips, you can help maintain the hygiene and health of your family and provide a clean and safe environment for toilet use.
