Rental bikes in London, especially Lime and Boris bikes, have become a popular mode of transportation for over 100,000 people daily. But has anyone thought about what might be on the handlebars of these bikes?

Worrying Experiments and Results

A new experiment shows that the handlebars of these bikes harbor dangerous bacterial contamination. Using microbiological swabs, samples were taken from the handlebars of popular bikes like Forest, Lime, and Boris.

The results indicate that the handlebars of rental bikes in London have, on average, more than 100 times the microbes of a toilet seat. For example, the Lime bike, with 60.6 million bacteria, is 140 times more contaminated than a toilet seat.

Surprises and Potential Dangers

The highest contamination was related to the Forest bike, which had 180 million bacteria, reported to be 418 times more contaminated than a toilet. Additionally, the tests showed signs of fecal bacterial contamination, which could result from the frequent use of these bikes.

The increase in the use of rental bikes since Lime entered the UK market in 2018 indicates the growing popularity of these vehicles. According to TfL, 10 percent of the 1.5 million daily bike trips in London are dedicated to rental bikes. However, with this volume of use, it is clear that these bikes have become a significant source of contamination.

In this experiment, specific techniques were used to count bacteria, and the results showed that the VOI bike, as the cleanest bike, had only 1,010 bacteria, while other bikes were significantly more contaminated.

Given these results, raising awareness about the hygiene and cleanliness of rental bikes seems essential. Riders should use disinfectants before using these bikes to prevent potential risks.
