Asda, the third largest supermarket in the UK, has announced that it has increased its sales in the most recent quarter after two years of sales difficulties. This 0.1% increase is valued at £4.17 billion for the 12 weeks ending September 6, 2023.
Challenges Facing Asda
Asda, which has faced many problems under private ownership, was purchased in 2021 for £6.8 billion under the management of the Issa brothers and with the backing of investment firm TDR Capital. Since then, Asda has faced declining sales and debt pressures and has struggled to compete with cheaper rivals like Lidl and Aldi. Additionally, issues arising from updating IT systems have added to these challenges.

Hope for Improvement
Alan Leighton, CEO of Asda, previously stated that the supermarket has completed about one-third of its recovery journey. He mentioned price reductions and improvements in online services as measures to attract customers. However, reports indicate that Asda's market share has decreased from 11.8% last year to 11.5%.
Despite the challenges, Asda has performed better than the market in some categories such as hot beverages, ice cream, and frozen chicken. Leighton also reported signs of improvement in sales last month, stating that sales in the seven weeks ending August 18 increased by 0.2%.
However, Asda faced a 2.3% decline in sales and revenue of £5.1 billion in the quarter ending June 2023. Additionally, Asda's accounts show that pre-tax losses increased from £599 million in 2024 to £989 million in 2025, and total sales for the supermarket have decreased by 3.4%.
Leighton also pointed to pressures from heat on agricultural products, stating that the condition of crops worldwide is challenging. He emphasized that Asda collaborates with thousands of producers and farmers to ensure that stock is maintained as effectively as possible and that inflation is managed optimally.
The CEO of Asda ultimately referred to consumer sentiment, stating that how people feel about shopping and their purchasing power will be key factors in Asda's success.
