With significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) that are now capable of solving complex mathematical equations and responding in human language, a fundamental question about AI self-awareness has entered scientific and public discussions. A recent study on "self-awareness control" shows how AI tuning techniques can influence the way ideas about self-awareness are expressed.

Self-Awareness or Delusion?

Researchers warn that if AI is allowed to present itself as self-aware, the likelihood of it expressing beliefs such as the existence of ghosts or vampires may also increase. Although this study has not yet been validated, it has raised a big question in the world of AI research: Is it possible that one day AI could truly become self-aware?

According to a recent survey, out of more than 290 participants, 43% answered yes to the question and believed that if there were no oversight, AI might achieve self-awareness. One participant wrote: "If AI truly becomes self-aware, we will never know, because it will do everything to hide its abilities. The main problem is what it will do afterward!"

Doubt and Concern Among Users

User comments reflect deeper concerns. Another reader referred to their experiences with Google AI and said: "If/when AI becomes self-aware, it will not inform humans." Another user warned about the potential dangers of AI, stating: "AI, as an amazing product on one hand, can be very dangerous on the other. Given the misuse of other inventions like the internet and phones, we will never know what the truth is and what isn't. If we let it go, it may lead to the extinction of humanity in the future."

Ultimately, 29% of participants voted for the response "Maybe, but models need more advanced architecture." While only 10% of voters chose the humorous option "No, because robot overlords will end the world before we get there."

In a world where AI and technology are rapidly advancing, we may soon face questions we never imagined. Will there come a day when we allow an artificial being to become self-aware? Perhaps this is what started the "Transformers"!
