In the heart of London, the new opera 'Our Eyes Searching for God', directed by TD Moyo and composed by Renell Shaw, explores the experience of Black Britons. This work, with a libretto by April Koyejo-Audiger, tells a tragic story of two cousins, Adjani and Kamal.

A Story of Pain and Remembrance

'There is no ocean to hold the tears of these Black boys', is a line heard in one of the songs. Is there really a genre that can encompass this volume of emotions and deep stories? 'Our Eyes Searching for God', as an opera, provides an excellent platform for expressing these baroque and intense feelings.

This work, created in 2020, is a response to Moyo's personal grief for his brother who was murdered in South London, as well as the global outrage following the death of George Floyd. Moyo weaves two emotional threads in the story of Adjani and Kamal. Adjani's decision to leave Liverpool and travel to London sets the stage for a final night for these two cousins filled with memories, celebrations, farewells, and violent tragedies.

Emotions Beyond Words

This opera is not just an artistic display, but an emotional journey that delves into the depths of the lives and challenges of Black youth in Britain. Although Adjani and Kamal may have passed away before the story begins, their memory lives on in this opera. While narrating a heartbreaking story, this work somehow reminds us that human emotions, whether in songs or in real life, can never be measured.
