Paul Scholes, the former midfielder of Manchester United, has recently expressed doubts about the abilities of the young goalkeeper Senna Lamens. Although Lamens has performed well since joining Old Trafford and has been praised by fans, Scholes believes that full trust in his abilities cannot yet be established.
Need for a Top Goalkeeper
In his podcast titled "The Good, The Bad, and The Football," Scholes said: "Which team have you seen win the Premier League without a top-class goalkeeper? Lamens could be one of those goalkeepers, but I'm still not sure, and it seems we need more time to judge him." These comments come as 24-year-old Lamens has recently made statements about his future at Manchester United, aiming to become one of the legends of the club.
Lamens' Challenges at Manchester United
Lamens stated last year: "This is England. If things go badly, they can put you under immense pressure, but if everything goes well, they will praise you to the skies." However, Scholes believes that Manchester United needs a high-quality goalkeeper to achieve great success. He pointed to successful teams in football history and said: "Look at Liverpool with Alisson, Arsenal with Ray, and Manchester United with Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar. They all had outstanding goalkeepers."
Scholes also referred to the need for patience and perseverance from Manchester United's coach, Michael Carrick, adding: "Should Carrick wait and see if he can find a top goalkeeper? I don't know." These remarks came after Lamens conceded a third goal from Erling Haaland in the Manchester derby against Manchester City, raising concerns about his performance.
Future of Senna Lamens
Lamens further added: "I take this cautiously, because to be mentioned in the same sentence as Schmeichel, I need to prove myself over and over again. But that was a very nice comment." He also expressed hope that he could play at Manchester United for 10 years and leave a legacy similar to Schmeichel and van der Sar.
Given Paul Scholes' comments and the challenges facing Senna Lamens, it seems that Manchester United must carefully consider their choice of future goalkeeper to take steps towards Premier League championship.
