Edu's Background in Football
At 48 years old, Edu previously played for Arsenal, participating in 127 matches, and after retiring, returned to the club as a technical director in 2019. He was promoted to the position of sporting director in 2022 and gained fame for his role in the rebuilding and improvement of Arsenal under the guidance of Mikel Arteta. However, his collaboration with Nottingham Forest ended due to failures in player recruitment and disagreements with Nuno Espírito Santo, the first of four coaches from last season.
Edu's New Role at Levski
Levski has stated in a statement that Edu's experience in sports strategy, talent selection and development, and organizational structure will be a significant asset for the club. Although his exact role at the club has not been specified, the Levski board will soon select its new chairman and executive director.
During the general meeting of Levski shareholders, Edu's appointment was confirmed, and he joined the board alongside three other new members: Claudio Praconi, Felipe Berliner, and Matthew Cherry. These changes come as Levski Sofia currently leads the Bulgarian league table by five points and is also competing in the Europa League.
Recent Successes of Levski
Levski won the Bulgarian league title last year after 14 years, breaking the record of consecutive victories held by their domestic rivals, Ludogorets, who had 14 consecutive championships. This success reflects the positive changes occurring within the club.
